Vaginismus and Botox

One of the more promising treatments being used for vaginismus, and this falls directly under physiological approaches to treating the body, is the use of Botox to reduce pain involved in vaginal penetration.

Brin MF and Vapnek JM presented Treatment of Vaginismus with Botulinum Toxin Injections in 1997 (Lancet 349: 252-253).

Since this publication, there has been a significant amount of promising research and practical application of the technique.

Shirin Ghazizadeh MD and Masoomeh Nikzad MD outlined one such study in Botulinum Toxin in the Treatment of Refractory Vaginismus, found in Obstetrics and Gynecology 104, 922-925. The results in the sample size were quite positive with respect to the efficacy of Botox treatment (in this case, the sub-type Dysport).

Furthermore, Botox was found to be effective when tested against a placebo (salt water believed by the patient to be Botox) in a 2000 study by Shafik A.
