What is Vulvar Vestibulitis?

Wednesday, July 22nd, 2009

Another term that you may have come across and that may be affecting your enjoyment of sex and life in general is Vulvar Vestibulitis.

This condition arises when nerves send a signal for vulvar pain, but then the signal does not stop when it should. As a result, vulvar pain becomes the norm, or certainly more frequent and prevalent than it should be, with pain signals being sent in the absence of stimuli that would normally be required for such a negative sensation.

Vulvar Vestibulitis (known sometimes as “V.V.”) can exist concurrently with vulvodynia and/or vaginismus, and can also be a cause of the latter condition.

Indeed, Vulvar Vestibulitis is sometimes considered a highly specific form of the vulvar pain syndrome vulvodynia.
